Turkish films to be screened at Toronto Festival
Two Turkish films will be screened during the Toronto International Film Festival to begin on Friday. The two films are "Köprüdekiler" (Men on the Bridge) by Aslı Özge and "Bunu Gerçekten Yapmalı Mıyım?" (Should I Really Do It?) by İsmail Necmi.
Among the most prestigious international film festivals in the world, this year's festival will take place from Sept. 10 to 19.
The festival will begin with "Creation," a film by Jon Amiel. Some of the other films to be screened are "Ondine" by Neil Jordan, "The Informant!" by Steven Soderbergh and "The Boys Are Back" by Clive Owen.
In "Men on the Bridge," Özge originally intended to reveal these different aspects of her hometown (Istanbul) in documentary format. Yet somewhere along the line, the project began to shift toward fiction. Using her original subjects, Özge scripted their lives to match her inspiration, casting each person in their own life story. In other words, "Men on the Bridge" is as true to life as fiction can possibly get.
Özge's films include the award winning short "Capital C," the feature "Little Bit of April" and the documentary "Hesperos' Apprentices." "Men on the Bridge" is her latest film.
The "Should I Really Do It?" follows the surreal story of Petra (Petra Woschniak), a mesmerizing figure who scours the streets of Istanbul.
Necmi has collaborated on a number of feature films, short films, television series and documentaries. "Should I Really Do It?" is his first feature film.
