These days, a nice original Vauxhall Viva costs an arm and a leg, but back in the 1970s, £100 bought you a 'good little runner', with the rust, bald tyres and dodgy MOT thrown in for free. All you needed was someone who knew how to fix it when it broke down! Brian Cunningham is that someone – or, at least, he used to be. Under the Bonnet is the totally true* story of being a car mechanic in the old days, when fixing a car was one thing, but keeping it fixed was something else entirely. These are the tales of a bygone age, full of secret scams, chaotic characters and cars almost bursting with personality. * some tales may be taller than others

Book Description
Download PDF Auto Repair For Dummies eBook. You can read online on your kindle, Android, iPhone, iPad. Most of us don’t know the first thing about the machines we’re licensed to drive – and this can turn a ticket to freedom into a ticket to trouble. If you’re like most people, you probably tend to drive around until something goes wrong with the car. You then incur the expense of replacing worn and burnt-out parts (or the entire engine) when low-cost, regular maintenance could have kept your wheels turning for a long time. Auto Repair For Dummies is indispensable for anyone who is tired of nodding and smiling at the incomprehensible mutterings of your mechanic, only to end up shelling out money for repairs that you neither fully understand nor always need. This easy-to-understand guide is also for you if you Don't have the vaguest idea of how a car works. Can't identify anything you see under the hood of your vehicle. Are tired of other people assuming (especially if you’re a teenager or a woman) that you aren’t capable of handling repairs yourself. Don't want to feel helpless in an emergency. Are tired of being ripped off because of your own ignorance. This book shows you how your car works; what it needs in the way of tender loving care; and how to keep from being overcharged if you need to entrust repairs to someone else. Auto Repair For Dummies also gives you the scoop on these topics and more: What makes your vehicle go (and how and why) A program of "preventive medicine" to avoid trouble Shopping for tools and knowing how to use them Diesel engines and alternatively powered cars How to keep your car looking its best Dealing with on-road emergencies Checking your tires, alignment, and steering By handling the simple maintenance and tune-ups and being able to diagnose trouble and perform the less complex repairs yourself, you’ll save some serious money. Once you break the ice (or crack open the hood), the heady sense of power will carry you through basic car repair and maintenance with confidence and ease.

Expanded to include the behind-the-scenes story of the 34th America’s Cup and Team USA’s incredible comeback Down eight-to-one in the 34th America’s Cup in September 2013, Oracle Team USA pulled off a comeback for the ages, with eight straight wins against Emirates Team New Zealand. Julian Guthrie’s The Billionaire and the Mechanic tells the incredible story of how a car mechanic and one of the world’s richest men teamed up to win the world’s greatest race. With a lengthy new section on the 34th America’s Cup, Guthrie also shows how they did it again. The America’s Cup, first awarded in 1851, is the oldest trophy in international sports. In 2000, Larry Ellison, co-founder and billionaire CEO of Oracle Corporation, decided to run for the prize and found an unlikely partner in Norbert Bajurin, a car mechanic and Commodore of the blue-collar Golden Gate Yacht Club. After unsuccessful runs for the Cup in 2003 and 2007, they won for the first time in 2010. With unparalleled access to Ellison and his team, Guthrie takes readers inside the building process of these astonishing boats and the lives of the athletes who race them and throws readers into exhilarating races from Australia to Valencia.

Book Description
Download PDF Career As An Automotive Technician eBook. You can read online on your kindle, Android, iPhone, iPad. IF YOU LOVE CARS, LIKE WORKING with your hands, and have a knack for solving problems, becoming an automotive technician or mechanic is a great career option. Getting started requires less formal education than most other jobs, yet it has the potential to become a rewarding career. Auto technicians and mechanics keep vehicles on the road by providing routine maintenance and doing repairs to correct problems when they occur. On any given day, they could change oil and rotate tires, install alarms and sat-navs, use diagnostic equipment to identify a faulty component, replace worn brakes, adjust timing, rebuild a transmission, and road-test repaired vehicles.Auto technicians and mechanics both have the mechanical ability to work on vehicles. There is one key difference, however, and that is their technical expertise. Vehicles today are increasingly complex, with computers and electronics integrated into nearly every system. Auto technicians are specifically trained to work with computers and other technical aspects of vehicles. This training is important since computerized diagnostics tools have become standard equipment. Once training is complete, auto technicians are certified and earn the designation of "technician." While mechanics do not have the same formal technical training as technicians, there is often little difference in job duties. There are several ways to learn the necessary skills for this work, from an informal apprenticeship to earning an associate degree at a community college. Programs offered by vocational schools are the most popular. These typically last between six months and a year and offer a certificate upon completion. Though relatively short, these programs are intense and packed with a great deal of knowledge and hands-on experience. Regardless of the type and length of formal training, however, on-the-job training is usually needed after graduation to qualify for the best jobs. Employers also prefer candidates with certification from the National Institute for Automotive Excellence. Certification is available in a number of areas, each focused on a specific automotive system, such as automatic transmissions, engine repair, or heating and air conditioning. Those who achieve certification in core areas can earn Master Technician status.Trained and skilled auto technicians and mechanics enjoy a high level of job security. This has become a high-tech career that is always in demand and cannot be outsourced overseas. The job outlook is very good because of a shortage of qualified candidates and the ever-growing love affair between Americans and their cars. Large car dealerships are always looking for good workers and that is where the largest percentage of jobs exists. There are also many jobs at independent repair shops that do general work on all kinds of vehicles, and franchise services that are dedicated to single systems like brakes or transmissions. There are plenty of other opportunities that are less obvious. Delivery services, municipal governments, public transportation departments, taxi companies, car and scooter rentals, and police departments all have fleets of vehicles that need regular service. Plus, there is always the opportunity for self-employment, which is common in this field.Once in the field, you will find success more quickly if you have strong problem-solving skills, pay attention to details, have excellent customer service skills, can work without supervision, and are physically fit. Even if you have no experience, you can start searching for a job today where you can learn the skills in a hands-on setting.
