Book Description
Download PDF The Cock S Spur eBook. You can read online on your kindle, Android, iPhone, iPad. "Hamby McFee dreams of leaving the valley of the Hiwassee in western North Carolina, and cockfighting is his means to that end. A renowned trainer of some of the meanest birds in the pit, he rests his hopes on the aged, much-feared Gouger, the apricot-tinted Pile-Driver, the strangely calm, lightning-quick Buttermilk. The mulatto ex-slave of the Curtis family, Hamby practices a loyalty he seldom feels. Fifteen years after the Civil War, he still inhabits the farm where he was once chattel."--Jacket.

Book Description
Download PDF Rehearsals Of Manhood eBook. You can read online on your kindle, Android, iPhone, iPad. "When John J. Winkler died in 1990, he left a substantially complete manuscript containing the final version of the project he had undertaken in the last decade of his life: an original interpretation of the development and meaning of ancient Greek drama. That manuscript was based on The Martin Classical Lectures at Oberlin College, which Winkler delivered in September of 1988. The present text has been edited and updated by classicists David Halperin, Winkler's literary executor, and Kirk Ormand, Winkler's student and an expert on Greek drama. Rehearsals of Manhood, the final work of a widely recognized and celebrated classical scholar, proposes an entirely new account of Greek drama providing an explanation of the social place of Greek drama and its relation to the gendered organization of Athenian social life. Winkler interprets drama as a secular manhood ritual, a public aesthetic undertaking focused on the initiation of boys into manhood and, specifically, on the training, the display, and the representation of young male warriors. According to Winkler, the chorus of both tragedy and comedy was composed of young Athenian men of citizen status, about eighteen to twenty years of age, who were undergoing military training in order to prepare themselves for the task of warfare; they danced on a rectangular dance floor in a rectangular formation that recalled the arrangement of the infantry phalanx; they accompanied plays that often highlighted scenarios of risk faced by young men on the verge of adulthood; and they performed in a theater whose seating was arranged to display the corporate body of the male citizenry as a whole, both its democratic equality and its hierarchical ranking according to degrees of excellence. Winkler does not offer new interpretations of the texts of Greek plays but a new account of how the very practice of dramatic performance fit into the social life and gender politics of the Athenian state"--

Book Description
Download PDF Adventures Of An Artisan Hunter eBook. You can read online on your kindle, Android, iPhone, iPad. Account of Plummer's development as a hunter, from boyhood exploits with lurcher and terrier to adulthood, with many interesting digressions. Includes chapters on cock-fighting and bird-catching, cooking and eating badgers, foxes and rats, hawks and hawking. Although Plummer often comes across as bonkers, many of his apparently eccentric actions, such as badger eating or covering himself with a concoction of badger grease and herbs, were experiments to establish the plausibility of claims made by other writers. Being perpetually surrounded by people incapable of sharing this pioneering spirit of enquiry seems the source of his restlessness and the driving force behind the hundreds of books he wrote in his lifetime. This is not to say that Plummer did not have deep problems, as he himself describes in Hancock's My Life with Lurchers.

Kotak taji' is Balinese for a small box in which spurs used during cockfighting bouts are ceremoniously stored and handed down to the next generation. Twenty-five years of meticulous collecting has resulted in a fantastic and exciting accumulation of more than 540 cases from the Indonesian archipelago, mostly originating from the exotic islands of Bali and Lombok, but also from Sulawesi and Kalimantan. The creation of these unique beautiful pieces of craftsmanship carved out of wood, bamboo, bone or ivory may soon become a forgotten tradition as cockfighting has been forbidden by law throughout Indonesia, as indeed it has in almost all other parts of the world.
