This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1867 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II. "TAKING HOLD," AND "HOLDING FAST." "Hold fast till I come." THINK that everything of importance for time and for eternity is packed tip into these words. A great many different thoughts and forms of expression are contained in them. Faith, believing, conversion, making our calling and election sure, being religious, being Christians--all these are but different forms of the words with which we have started--"Taking hold," and "Holding fast." And I wish to write about them now, because they affect you and me very closely, and because they are used concerning the manner in which we, from our life on heart, touch, and take possession of, a better life let down for us from heaven. Have you ever been deep down into a coal-mine, and visited its underground galleries, its dark and dismal passages, its gloomy chambers, and dangerous labyrinths? Suppose, now, that you had been born in such a mine, that you had never been accustomed to anything else, that you had played about in those dark corridors, had grown up to be a boy or girl in ignorance of what the world outside looked like, and were a stranger to any light but the glimmer coming down to you through shafts from above; and suppose that every day, in a lift let down from the upper world, a visitor were to descend into this place, and were to summon you to him, saying, "You cannot tell how lovely everything is in the green woods and meadows above from which I come. The light, which you only see in faint glimmers here, lights up the hills and the valleys there, which I cannot describe to you, because they are very fair. Instead of dark coal and unhealthy air all round you, there are bright rivers and beautiful trees and flowers, and soft breezes bringing health and enjoyment to...

Download PDF Death Dying And The Ending Of Life Volumes I And Ii eBook. You can read online on your kindle, Android, iPhone, iPad. The two volumes of Death, Dying, and the Ending of Life present the core of recent philosophical work on end-of-life issues. Volume I examines issues in death and consent: the nature of death, brain death and the uses of the dead and decision-making at the end of life, including the use of advance directives and decision-making about the continuation, discontinuation, or futility of treatment for competent and incompetent patients and children. Volume II, on justice and hastening death, examines whether there is a difference between killing and letting die, issues about physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia and questions about distributive justice and decisions about life and death.

Download PDF A Dignified Ending eBook. You can read online on your kindle, Android, iPhone, iPad. A Dignified Ending challenges the idea that prolonging life by every means possible is the only reasonable response to a dire diagnosis or to intractable suffering. It uses true accounts to illustrate how people have choreographed their deaths, and it recommends that death with dignity laws include dementias and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Book Description
Download PDF Ending Life eBook. You can read online on your kindle, Android, iPhone, iPad. Margaret Pabst Battin has established a reputation as one of the top philosophers working in bioethics today. This work is a sequel to Battin's 1994 volume The Least Worst Death. The last ten years have seen fast-moving developments in end-of-life issues, from the legalization of physician-assisted suicide in Oregon and the Netherlands to furor over proposed restrictions of scheduled drugs used for causing death, and the development of "NuTech" methods of assistance in dying. Battin's new collection covers a remarkably wide range of end-of-life topics, including suicide prevention, AIDS, suicide bombing, serpent-handling and other religious practices that pose a risk of death, genetic prognostication, suicide in old age, global justice and the "duty to die," and suicide, physician-assisted suicide, and euthanasia, in both American and international contexts. As with the earlier volume, these new essays are theoretically adroit but draw richly from historical sources, fictional techniques, and ample factual material.

Book Description
Download PDF Regulating The End Of Life eBook. You can read online on your kindle, Android, iPhone, iPad. Death Rights is a collection of cutting-edge chapters on assisted dying and euthanasia, written by leading authors in the field. Providing an overview of current regulation on assisted dying and euthanasia, both in the UK and internationally, this book also addresses the associated debates on ethical, moral and rights issues. It considers whether, just as there is a right to life, there should also be a right to death, especially in the context of unbearable human suffering. The unintended consequences of prohibitions on assisted dying and euthanasia are explored, and the argument put forward that knowing one can choose when and how one dies can be life-extending, rather than life-limiting. Key critiques from feminist and disability studies are addressed. The overarching theme of the collection is that death is an embodied right which we should be entitled to exercise, with appropriate safeguards, as and when we choose. Making a novel contribution to the debate on assisted dying, this interdisciplinary book will appeal to those with relevant interests in law, socio-legal studies, applied ethics, medical ethics, politics, philosophy, and sociology.

Book Description
Download PDF Adaptation And Autonomy Adaptive Preferences In Enhancing And Ending Life eBook. You can read online on your kindle, Android, iPhone, iPad. This volume gathers together previously unpublished articles focusing on the relationship between preference adaptation and autonomy in connection with human enhancement and in the end-of-life context. The value of individual autonomy is a cornerstone of liberal societies. While there are different conceptions of the notion, it is arguable that on any plausible understanding of individual autonomy an autonomous agent needs to take into account the conditions that circumscribe its actions. Yet it has also been suggested that allowing one’s options to affect one’s preferences threatens autonomy. While this phenomenon has received some attention in other areas of moral philosophy, it has seldom been considered in bioethics. This book combines for the first time the topics of preference adaptation, individual autonomy, and choosing to die or to enhance human capacities in a unique and comprehensive volume, filling an important knowledge gap in the contemporary bioethics literature.
